OUR AIM We originally set up this site to help raise funds to take Bella to USA for Life changing surgery to help her walk. The operation is called SDR & since taking Bella the same operation has started to become available in the UK but still sadly parents are often having to pay. With your help by donating and attending Bella's events we were able to take Bella to the USA to have her SDR operation on her spine in April 2010. She is now able to walk BUT Bella still requires your help to make sure she receives ongoing intensive physio following her surgery and to help her muscles to get strong and not tighten up again. Her 2 surgeries have already had a massive positive result for Bella. Please go to 'Bellas Op Diary' above for details on how bella got on in USA during May 2010. This surgery is call "Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy" or SDR & has been performed by Dr Park at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri for over 20 years with great results. Dr Park's surgery wasn't available in this country so we had to travel to USA and pay privately for Bella to have this opportunity. Costs for this surgery and the trip were just over £40,000. Attitudes are slowly changing in the UK on this operation and a surgeon in the UK who has been trained on Dr Parks methods has did the 1st SDR in May 2011. Sadly it doesn't mean that the operation is going to be funded by the NHS but it's great news as families may not have to travel to the USA to get Dr Park's method of SDR.
